ETHIOPIAN HISTORY SUMMARY

July 23rd 1892:Tafari Makonnen born in Ejarsa Goro,Harer province Ethiopia.

1895:Italy invades Ethiopia.

1896:Menelik II defeats the Italians at Adowa.

1899:Menelik II conquers the Ogaden region.

1905 Nov 1:Tafari makonnen given the title Dejazmatch by his father,Ras Makonnen.

1906 Mar 21:Ras Makonnen dies.

1910 Mar  3:Tafari appointed governor of Harer Province.

1913 Dec 12:Menelik II dies.

1916 Sept :Menelik's wife Empress Zauditu siezes control.Names Tafari a Ras.

1923:Ras Tafari petitions the 'League Of Nations' successfully to accept Ethiopia.

1928:Tafari forces Zauditu to name him Negus.

1930 Nov 2:Following death of Zauditu,Tafari crowned Emperor and takes the name 
                  Haile Selassie.

1931:Ethiopia's first constitution.

1935:Italy invades Ethiopia.

1936:Haile Selassie flees Ethiopia and settles in Bath, England.

1941 Jan :British troops defeat Italian forces.Selassie returns to Ethiopia.

1944:The British government restore Selassie to the throne against the wishes of the people.

1952:Eritrea federated with Ethiopia following a UN adoption of a US initiated plan.

1955:Ethiopian constitution revised.

1960:Mengistu Neway,commander of the Imperial guard and brother Germame mount an 
        unsuccessful coup.

1962:Selassie abolishes the federation of Eritrea and Ethiopia.

1963:The Organisation Of African Unity (OAU) is established at a meeting in Addis Abeba.

1973:Famine strikes Ethiopia in the northern provinces of Welo and Tigre.
        Selassie tries to cover up this fact from the world according to the world's press.
        The population riot about high prices and lack of food.

1974:Selassie is overthrown in a popular uprising.

1974 Sept 12:Selassie seen in public for the last time.

1975 Aug 28: The reported death of Haile Selassie.
